Product Description
Liner Note Authors: Dave Burke ; Alan Taylor.
Arriving five years after the second installment, The Birth of Surf, Vol. 3 ever so slightly emphasizes recordings cut after 1963, a year where the phenomenon started to fade and mutate. It didn't, however, die out. Some of the genre's biggest hits arrived in 1964 and the echoey twang and rolling drums reverberated for decades, even if this flair started to seem passé in 1966. The Birth of Surf, Vol. 3 isn't concerned with either passing fashion or hits -- there are recognizable names here, including the Chantays, Dick Dale, and the Surfaris, but there aren't any songs that will be well-known to the wider audience -- but through its 26 tracks, it does illustrate how this seemingly limited style offered a variety of pleasures, ranging from crackerjack rock & roll to the kind of cinematic audio verite Dave Myers & the Surftones serve up in "Gear!." This isn't an introductory surf collection by any means, but once you appreciate the subtle distinctions between these seemingly faceless groups, this is one of the better comps you'll find. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
