GWR, Great WQestern Railway - The Golden Years of British Steam Trains, by Colin Garratt (on the work of The Rev. A.W.V. Mace)

Published by Milepost in 1995, 48 pages. Hardback - c.22.5cm by 29.5cm (RW5)

This book is a fascinating collection of black and white photographs showing the locomotives of the London, Midland and Scottish railway during the heyday of steam.

From the rear side cover: The Reverend A.W.V. Mace was a prolific railway photographer whose career ranged from the early 1920s almost until his death in 1986. Britain's "Big Four" railway companies were formed in 1923 cnd operated until nationalisation in 1948 and it was during this twenty five year period that Arthur Mace did his most creative work. This book, along with it's companion volumes on the L.N.E.R. Southern and G.W.R. shows the high summer of British steam operation when the most technically advanced designs worked alongside a plethora of ancient and individualistic classes dating back to the many smaller companies of pre-1923.

Milepost 92 1/2 took over the custodianship of Arthur Mace's pictorial legacy in 1994 and began the enormous task of cataloguing the negatives and storing them in archivally safe materials. Few of Arthur Mace's pictures had ever been published prior to Milepost taking over the collection, but these volumes will clearly establish him as one of the leading names in the history of railway photography

The condition of the book is generally very good. The cover has one or two minor scuffs and some light nibbling and wear along the edges and corners, but the spine is tight and intact, and all pages are intact, unblemished and tightly bound. The first inside page has been clipped across the top right hand corner.

When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
