Statues of the Raj, by Mary Ann Steggles

Book published by the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia in 2001, 131 pages. Paperback (N8423X1)

This book tells a family saga spanning five generations in a 200-year cycle of emigrating from England, becoming part of the Anglo-Indian community in and around Madras, until finally returning to England and British Rail...

From the rear side cover: A Railway Family in India covers five generations of the Stevenages whose adventurous forebear left the shores of England in 1778 at the age of 19 as a private in the East India Company's Madras European Regiment, and founded a family in India.

The author describes how the family as members of the 'twilight community of Anglo-Indians' progressed through successive generations in Madras, Bangalore, Cochin, and Bellary until emigrating to England after Indian Independence. The author's meticulously researched account of his family concludes with his own reminiscences and details of his mainstream career in the Madras & Southern Mahratta railway, and subsequently in a senior position within British Rail. A unique family saga spanning nearly 200 years which will appeal to all those who enjoy reading about the different aspects of India, and in particular to the railway enthusiast and genealogist.

The condition of the book is generally very good. The covers have one or two minor scuffs, but the spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound.

When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
