The surround not only affects the bass parameters of a speaker it also absorbs and reflects various cone vibrations throughout the frequency spectrum. Further, the surround often determines the response of a speaker to peak signals. Serious speaker designers put a lot of effort and science into the specifics of each particular surround. The type of material, treatment, thickness profile, curvature, angle of attachment and exact method of attachment all come into play. There are as many variations as there are speaker brands and generally they are not interchangeable.
