Measure your best fitting jeans. You can get a measuring tape at the Dollar Store, Walmart, etc. Write this down for future reference. Garment measurements are larger than your body. You need ease in your clothes for best fit. Measure the front waist and back waist. Measure the rise. That's the crotch seam to the waist. Measure the hips. That's the biggest place between the waist and the crotch That will be the side seam to middle seam x 2. Do the same on the back. The butt may be different from the front. Measure the inseam from crotch to hem. 

Don't trust the labels. Clothes shrink, vintage or pre-owned clothing may be a totally different system than today. Every manufacturer is different. Reduce your risk of buying online and take a few minutes to check the measurements. If the seller doesn't show them, ASK. It's worth the extra few minutes to get a great result.
