The 95GS was the first Grand Seiko made by Seiko after the GS line was resurrected in 1988.
The 9581/87 caliber was (and still is) one of Seiko's highest rated quartz calibers with an accuracy of +/- 10s /year. A total of nine 95GS references were produced. Every part of the watches was manufactured in-house, including the quartz crystals, grown in Seiko’s own facilities.
This example is in excellent condition with very little apparent wear.
It features a sunburst silver dial with steel spear shaped hour and minute hands, detailed with fine black lines increasing the legibility. The bevelled design of the case gives the watch a very elegant look and definitely fits within the design language of vintage and modern Grand Seiko. Because of its quartz movement the watch sits low in profile and its 33mm diameter allows it to be subtle on the wrist. Below 12 o'clock there is an applied "Seiko" logo, and above 6 o'clock there is a "Grand Seiko" logo. The crown is also signed with "GS" and winds smoothly.
The dial is furnished with machined straight raised baton hour indices, accented with black, and with the raised markers on the chapter ring reflects the light from all angles.

In 1988 the "no-date" 9581 was Seiko’s first GS after the brand was abandoned in the early seventies, as the Grand Quartz was in the late seventies. Later on of course, a date complication was included and the calibre was named 9587,  the more practical watch possibly.
Seiko rebranded Grand Quartz into Grand Seiko, with GS still on the dial however. In reviving the GS as a quartz collection it was crucial that they develop a quartz module to live up to the GS name and standard. The movement is a Seiko Quartz Cal 9581A, with 7 Jewels, 32,768 Hz, with thermal compensation, it is anti-magnetic, and has an accuracy of +/-10 sec per year, (with a 3-year battery life).
It is still one of the world’s most accurate watches, 35 years onward.
The quartz module is better than previous “thin” Seiko modules. In fact this calibre was later re-designated 9F83. It is equipped with a unique Twin Pulse Control high-torque stepper motor which makes each second hand movement in two fluid pulses to reduce energy consumption. Instantaneous date change occurs over just 0.5 milliseconds, while a backlash auto-adjustment mechanism eliminates stepper error. The movement module is air-tight, ensuring the stepper rotor and lubricants are protected from particles of dust. This last feature maintains optimal performance for an estimated period of 50 years before requiring a service.
The sapphire crystal has a tiny chip at 9-o-clock, it is barely noticeable when worn, I have marked it with a sharpie, to show it clearly, the price has been adjusted accordingly.
One cannot ignore that the Grand Seiko Quartz is in fact the ultimate GS, more so than any modern mechanical GS. Owning a GS Quartz is wearing a timepiece in which the Grand Seiko ideals of precision have been fully incorporated.
