This masterpiece, one of Kempe's masterpieces, was recorded about two and a half to six months before his death. Brahms had also recorded the complete symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic, but since two of the recordings were mono, this is the only stereo recording of the complete works. Originally recorded on the BASF label, this is a rare session recording of Kempe and the Munich Philharmonic in their later years. Since the original analog master tapes have disappeared with the rise and fall of various labels, this time the masters provided by the former distributors of the original recordings were used for the commercialization. This is the best master in existence. The sound quality has been carefully mastered for maximum improvement, and the album has been reissued as an SA-CD hybrid disc. This masterpiece, which has never been blessed with excellent sound quality, has been revived with unprecedented freshness.
Kempe is a conductor who has always been open-minded in his music making, following the “natural law of music” without being influenced by tradition or old customs, and this Brahms in particular is the best example of his attitude and achievements. The Brahms has been one of his best-known works since its release. In the first movement, the tempo is calm, but the driving force is strong, and the music is performed in a single movement. The second piece, the best in terms of both sound quality and performance, is a masterpiece, and the third piece, with its solid structure and forward momentum, has an aesthetics that only Kempe could have achieved. And in No. 4, the first recording of the entire collection, the controlled and competent conducting is very captivating. The music is not the same in any of the recordings, and one can clearly understand, especially in high sound quality, that the music is created by the natural outpouring from the score, capturing the essence of the music. However, the recording was hard and indistinct even on LP, and even in the CD era, the situation remained the same on some imports, with poor resolution and other problems. About 10 years ago, the XRCD was reissued with the clearest sound quality ever, and this time, the SA-CD version has gone one step further, aiming for a smoother and richer sound quality. Although the recording locations were the same, the recording conditions differed from track to track. The latest mastering process employs ALTUS' new “high sampling overtone” technology, and Kempe's masterpieces, which have not always been blessed with excellent sound quality, are now available as SA-CD hybrids with the highest sound quality ever.
