I have here for sale four books entitled A HISTORY OF AGRICULTURE AND PRICES IN ENGLAND from the Year after the Oxford Parliament (1259) to the Commencement of the Continental War (1793), compiled entirely from Original and Contemporaneous Records by James E Thorold Rogers, Vols I-IV of a 7 volume set.  All 4 volumes were published by Clarendon Press, Oxford - Vols I and II in 1866 (leather bound) and Vols III & IV in 1882 (cloth bound).  Vol I and II cover the period 1259-1400 and Vols III and IV cover 1401 to 1582.  The books cover the prices and methods of all types of farming from grain, wood, building materials, tools and equipment, fish, livestock, carriages, wages for farm workers, taxes, wine, textiles, etc.

James Edwin Thorold Rogers (23 March 1823 – 14 October 1890), known as Thorold Rogers, was an English economist, historian and Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1880 to 1886. He deployed historical and statistical methods to analyse some of the key economic and social questions in Victorian England. As an advocate of free trade and social justice he distinguished himself from some others within the English Historical School.  This was his most well known work and the statistics for which took many years to collate.

All four volumes are ex-library.  Vols I and II are bound in full calf leather with 5 raised bands, gilt tooling, dark green title and volume blocks with gilt lettering to the spines.  A few small tears to the leather on the front board of Vol II.  Both front boards have cracked joints so they feel a little loose.  Gilt dentelle to the inside of the boards.  Marbled endpapers with bookplate for Sir Julius Wernher.  Yellow tinted page edges.  Purple library stamps to the title pages and a few others.  Pages clean throughout.  Vols III and IV are bound in tan cloth hardboards with gilt lettering to the spine.  Library reference numbers to the base of the spine.  Bumped to head and tail on both.  Otherwise boards in very good condition.  Pages clean apart from library stamps as for Vols I and II above.  Condition of all 4 overall: very good.  Vol I - 711 pages, Vol II - 714 pages, Vol III - 775 pages, Vol IV - 779 pages.  Index at the back of each volume.  23 x 15 cm.
