I have here for sale a 3-book set entitled THE ESSAYS OF MICHAEL SEIGNEUR DE MONTAIGNE, translated into English, from the French edition by Peter Coste. It is the 8th edition published in 1776 by J Pote, E Ballard, et al, London.
Michel de Montaigne, was one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance. He is known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre. His work is noted for its merging of casual anecdotes and autobiography with intellectual insight. Montaigne had a direct influence on numerous Western writers; his massive volume Essais contains some of the most influential essays ever written.
Bound in full tan calf leather hardboards with 5 raised bands to the spines and gilt volume numbers. Both boards are loose on all three volumes. Vol II has a vertical split in the binding block and spine. Some tears and loss to the leather on Vols I and II. Rubbed to edges. Bookplate to Vol I for Charles Edward Rawlins with a note from John Aikin to Rawlins giving the book as a gift. Internally the pages are pretty clean throughout all three volumes, just one or two pages that have light foxing. Condition: good. Vol I - 414 pages + index; Vol II - 608 pages + index; Vol III - 468 pages + index. 22 x 14 cm.
