A lovely looking set, in good quality uniform matching brown 3/4 leather bindings by the English firm of fine bookbinders Riviere & Son, a complete set of the novels of George du Maurier (1834-1896), the man who introduced the character 'Svengali' to the world in his Gothic novel 'Trilby', and was father of actor and producer Sir Gerald du Maurier and grandfather of the author Daphne du Maurier

George du Maurier was a Franco-British cartoonist producing artwork for Punch magazine and numerous other periodicals of the time, who in later years with a large family to support and the eyesight failing in his one good eye, turned his hand to also writing novels, all three of which are included here, among them first editions.

Not easy to photograph these books so please note when viewing them that the gilt is bright and the spine title panels are brown not greenish.

Please Note: due to the heavy weigh of this parcel (over 3kg) and the Royal Mail 2kg maximum limit for parcels to Canada, delivery to Canada would be extremely expensive and therefore excluded, other countries have a 5kg limit and prices are as quoted.

Robert Riviere (1808-1882), whose excellent workmanship and good taste employed in his bindings gradually won the appreciation of connoisseurs and great collectors, including the Duke of Devonshire, Queen Victoria, and the Royal Family. Among his other work he was chosen to bind 1,000 copies of the large 'Illustrated Catalogue' for the 1851 Great Exhibition for presentation to all the 'crowned heads' of Europe and other distinguished persons, and given the task of restoring and rebinding the famous 'Domesday Book'. Late in life, in 1880, Robert Riviere took his grandson into the business as a partner (and eventual owner after Robert's death), from which time their work was stamped "Bound by Riviere & Son".
