Description:

"If this little book should by chance afford an hour's amusement to the candid reader, he will owe that pleasure to Dr. Samuel Johnson, who has long honoured me with his friendship and patronage. He prompted and encouraged me, justly diffident as I was of my abilities, to write the life of Mr. Garrick; a work which should comprehend A History of the Stage, during his administration of it, with characters and anecdotes of other actors, his contemporaries". (From the Advertisement, Vol. I).

A scarce first edition, in two volumes; bound in contemporary full calf, spines with gilt banding, gilt lettering on red and black morocco labels (chipped to v2); both volumes with some wear to extremities, small loss to spine ends, joints split with three boards a little loosened but holding well, the other firm; armorial bookplate to front pastedown in v1; text-blocks firm, pages a little age-toned with some foxing and minor soiling in places, else in good order.
