Vintage Zuni Sterling Silver & Turquoise Petit Point
Ring unsigned measuring 15/16” tall and 9/16” wide. The
turquoise stones are set in a saw-tooth bezel setting with twisted rope trim
and raindrop accents. There
is a lot of color change showing in the turquoise, which means these are indeed
old earrings (please read below). The jewelry will be shipped in the red
jewelry box pictured.
The Zuni Indians began creating Petit Point Jewelry in the
1940’s. Still to this day, this jewelry is created almost entirely
by Zuni Indians (some Navajo too); therefore, it is not made anywhere else in
the world! It is among some of the most in-depth and labor-intensive jewelry to
create and very impressionable wearable art.
To create this incredible sterling silver ring, each
bezel (usually saw-tooth in style) is individually shaped and soldered. The
stones (normally Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and Mediterranean Red Coral) are
cut, glued to matchsticks, shaped, and polished by a grinding wheel.
This gorgeous Zuni piece is genuine Native
Handmade jewelry and is not only beautiful, but also historical, cultural, and
made in the USA!!!
turquoise stone color changes
Turquoise is a compound that includes metals such as aluminum,
copper, or iron. Since Natural, untreated turquoise is also a porous stone;
water, lotions, skin oils and any other liquids it meets can cause some of
these metals to oxidize, or in other words rust. As a result of oxidation, the
stones can change color. Blue turquoise that contains copper can change from a
light blue to a dark green.
Turquoise stones are more porous than others, even from
the same mine. The characteristic of a high-quality turquoise is that it
changes slowly, meaning it is a harder stone. Many older pieces of jewelry can
be identified because the color change in the turquoise and in many pieces of
cluster work, for instance Zuni work, some stones will change while others will
remain the same blue color, they always were even though they are older pieces
and worn often.
Stabilized turquoise cabs, which are poorer quality turquoise,
are less likely to change color than natural or untreated stones. Stabilized
turquoise is infused with epoxy or reconstituted stone (turquoise powder) is
mixed with plastic and then molded. Most of the turquoise sold now is treated.
Good untreated turquoise fetches a premium price!
Thanks for looking and have a great day!
