RETROSPECT OF WESTERN TRAVEL BY HARRIET MARTINEAU HARPER’S 1942 FACSIMILE EDITION.  When you look this book up online, it takes quite a bit to narrow down exactly which edition one has to hand.  I am now convinced that I am able to offer for your consideration: “Retrospect of Western Travel,” by Harriet Martineau, in two volumes, both with dust jackets.  These two small books (5 ¼ x 8 ¼ inches, 276 & 239 pages plus several pages of publishers adverts at the end of Volume II) were published by Harper & Brothers of New York.  Research suggests that these are indeed the 1942 reprints of the First American Edition from 1838 which were published on the occasion of Harper’s 125th Anniversary.  This publishing information is not printed in the book, anywhere that I could find.  The books are bound in very dark green textured cloth with a handsome paper title label on the spine.  They are protected by red, geometrically patterned, printed dust jackets with simulated paper labels on their spines.  I will include photos of the Table of Contents from each volume, for your further information.

Condition:  These books are in very good condition.  The dust jackets show a bit of wear, including a small chip off the bottom edge of Volume I and general fading to the spines of both (without affecting the legibility and attractiveness of the simulated paper label).  The hard covers of both volumes are pristine, bright and attractive, with clean, bright and unchipped paper spine labels (please be sure to see the photos).  Inside, the books are unmarked and the pages are clean and bright from cover to cover, with one minor exception.  A newspaper clipping about the author, dating from 1949, is laid-in at the title page of Volume II and has left an acid stain on the pages.  Otherwise, the interior pages are truly exceptional, even for a reprint.  The hinges are fully intact and the binding is tight, sound and square in each volume.  These books are not ex-library or are they remainders.  I would venture to say that these books are in as good a condition as one can find.

Shipping:  These two books will be very carefully packed, with bubble wrap and solid cardboard protection and promptly mailed upon payment.  Please note that I do not charge for packing and handling; all you pay is the postage.  Media mail postage for these two small-sized hard cover books will be only $5.00.  Within the US for domestic mailings, combined shipping for multiple purchases is gladly offered.  You will pay full price for the shipping of the first book and half price for any others purchased that same week.  For example, two books with shipping at $4 each will ship for $6 combined.

Please see my many other vintage and collectible books on offer, quite a mixed bag but hopefully appealing to some of you.

Please don’t hesitate to send in any questions; I will monitor closely and respond promptly.  Thanks and enjoy.
