The Naval Chronicle was a British monthly periodical which started publication in 1799, recording, during a time of great turbulence in Europe and beyond, the current exploits of the British Navy around Britain and overseas, along with biographical sketches of important figures, Naval lists including of the many ships Lost, Destroyed, and Prizes captured, ships entering and leaving port, Government Committee investigations of Royal Navy matters, essays on various nautical issues, and much more.

This sale is for an original Volume 10, a bound volume containing the six issues from July to December 1803. The text is complete, but from the list showing in photo 6 above it is missing the following six illustration plates: - cxxx View of Naples Bay; cxxxii View of Tetuan; cxxxiv View of Santa Cruz; cxxxvi View of Entrance to Halifax Harbour, Nova scvotia; cxxxviii Representation of the Siege of Gibraltar; and, cxl View of Coblentz.

On Sale is an original 1803 first edition of volume X of * The Naval Chronicle * by various authors, published by J. Gold, London, dated mdccciii (1803) to the title page with no other editions or impressions listed, size approximately 9-1/2 inches x 6 inches, with vi + 520 pages + an 8-page Index. 

The original hardcover has a leather spine and corners with marbled paper covered boards and a gilt spine title, it's a little rubbed and bumped at the edges, worn around the spine and corners, the leather spine strip has at some time split into several pieces and been glued into place, gilt reasonably bright with title and date clearly legible, slightly age-toned, otherwise reasonably clean (see photo's 1, 2 & 3). Inside is lacking the six illustration plates as noted above otherwise complete, page edges tinted, the marbled endpapers are partially split along the fold at the front and sound at the rear, has a previous owner's Heraldic style bookplate for William Wells to the front fixed endpaper (photo 4), no other writing or graffiti, hinges sound with both boards attached, binding tight with pages well attached, corners not turned and pages not torn, not tanned, a little off-setting mainly from the plates, some scattered foxing mostly to a few outer leaves and a little to occasional margins else largely clear, not heavily read, a very occasional usage / dust mark, otherwise generally clean and tidy.
