CTHULHU COMPANION

Vintage Classic sourcebook/rules expansion and four short scenarios for the Call of Cthulhu RPG.

One the earliest supplements made for the game.

Chaosium #2304

First Edition, First Print 1983

by The Master: Sandy Petersen, Willis, Sullivan, et al.

Original owner. One of my earliest Call of Cthulhu purchases from way back in 1986 and it is still in Very Good+ to

Very Good Condition Overall. Never gamed with it - because most of the material was later reprinted in the 3rd edition

rulebook (which was my first), but I didn't realize this until after buying it. Still a cool book though, if only for the

awesome cover art! Anyway, the only flaws are some typical cover scuffing from age and transport, and two small

impressions from where I removed price tags. Otherwise the book is Excellent. Tight cover, clean un-rusted staples,

and the interior pages are bright, clean and completely free of marks. Please see photos.

Capsule Review from RPG.NET:

"This is a fine example of those early Call of Cthulhu products where an amazing amount of material is crammed into

a small number of pages. Around half the book is given over to 4 scenarios, the rest being a mix of background

articles, rules and other keeper aids. The scenario and background articles have lasted well, but the more rules

orientated material has been rendered obsolete. Fortunately only 8-9 pages out of 64 in total deal with rules issues.

Some of the non-scenario material breaks down as follows: A long and interesting essay on the Cthulhu Mythos in

Mesoamerican religion full of useful info (5 pages). A collection of notes on The Necronomicon translated from the

work of a fictitious Bulgarian scholar, and tracing the mention of mysterious beings throughout occult tomes - this is a

lot of fun to use as a hand-out found by investigators amongst the effects of said Bulgarian scholar (3 pages).

collection of prayers and quotes which may be of use in games (2 pages). A long list of Lovecraftian adjectives

which looks silly, but I'd bet has pulled many a keeper out of a tight spot when struggling for words (2 pages).

The four scenarios are written in the old Call of Cthulhu-style, and are strong pieces of concise writing which have

aged FAR Better than some of the scenarios in contemporaneous supplements.

So is this a worthwhile buy ? The answer is a resounding YES! The CTHULHU COMPANION has stood the test of

time better than many of the early Call of Cthulhu supplements, with only the rules article being rendered out of date.

When first published this was a straight 5/5 - I still rate it as 4/4.

Style: 4 (Classy & Well Done)

Substance: 4 (Meaty)

A great supplement from the early days of Call of Cthulhu that stands the test of time! 4/4"
