The first and second images are of flowering mature plants that are part of my permanent collection. Third and fourth photos are of flowering-sized plants offered for sale, planted in pure NZ sphagnum in 2.25” plastic pots. All are nice, near-flowering sized offsets that should flower later this winter.
Pinguicula laueana is a stunning, red-flowered tropical butterwort that is relatively easy to grow and flower under suitable conditions. In nature, it is restricted to middle elevation cloud forests of the Sierra Mixe in northeastern Oaxaca, Mexico. As is evident in the image above, select populations often have very showy and brilliantly-colored flowers that are among the most attractive of the genus. A well-established clump is a beautiful and different table centerpiece.
The “BR” clone of Pinguicula laueana originated from a legacy wild-collected plant cultivated in the San Francisco Bay Area by a well-known local orchid grower. Unlike several of the tissue-cultured clones available online, this form is rare in cultivation. Flowers have nicely shaped, rounded corolla lobes and the leaves usually show a lot of red saturation in good light. It is a highly desirable carnivorous plant species that, when mature, can flower from mid-spring through to the fall under proper conditions. It is suitable for bright windowsill cultivation. While preferring cooler to intermediate temperatures, they expand to their largest rosette size during the warm summer and early fall months. Plants offered are rooted offsets taken from plants in my collection. A must have for all serious CP enthusiasts and an exceptional companion plant for cool orchid growers.
