We were pleased to find these antiquarian volumes at an estate sale recently. They are "The History of Scotland During the Reigns of Queen Mary and King James VI Till His Accession to the Crown of England with a Review of the Scottish History Previous to the Period, and an Appendix containing Original Papers.'' It was written by William Robertson, principal of the University of Edinburgh and historiographer to his majesty for Scotland. They were published in London in 1806 by various printers as a 17th edition. These are Volumes II and III of the three-volume set.

Each hardcover volume measures 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches and features marbled endpapers. The boards are leather with gilt borders on the front and back and gilt lettering and decorations in the spines. The bookplate of a previous owner -- D.B. Draper -- is affixed inside each front board.

The condition is not perfect. The boards show age and handling wear, and the upper spine of Volume III shows leather loss (see scans). There is a bit of paper loss inside the front boards where previous pastedowns were removed, and there is some foxing and age-toning to the pages. There are small curled corners to the first 24 pages of Volume II, the hinges are cracked and the front board of Volume II is loose from the text block. But the contents of these vintage volumes far outweigh any condition issues.

In a separate listing we offer other antiquarian volumes by this author.

We offer this item with no reserve, and we gladly combine shipping. Please read "Shipping and Payment" instructions before bidding. Payment is due within five days of the end of the auction.
