Hohner MSE1/Casio CSM-1
The Hohner MSE1 is a rebadged version of the Casio CSM-1, an external MIDI sound module released by Casio in 1989.
Although designed as a sound generator for MIDI keyboards, a handful of
games also supported the module for music and sound effects. The CSM-1 uses 12-bit PCM samples and is multi-timbral allowing
up to four different timbres at one time with a 12 note polyphony. 100 preset tones are built-in (including acoustic and electronic instrument
sounds, sound effects, and 49 percussion instruments, all handily listed on the lid) and 20
auto-rhythms.
Power can be from 6 x AA batteries or a generic centre-negative 9VDC adaptor (not included).
This particular unit has a few superficial scuffs and scratches but is otherwise complete and undamaged. They are actually surprisingly good fun - as well as all the "normal" sounds you would expect, there are FX like frogs, gunshots and robot voices plus some cheesy and not-so-cheesy rhythms. I meant to sell this before, but testing it put a smile on my face so I put it away again! However, I have reluctantly had to conclude that I have too much stuff, so it seeks a loving new home ;-)
