From the introduction: In 1920 John Murray published "Divisional and Other Signs" a slim hard-back book containing notes on over one hundred formation signs which emerged during the First World War. They were collected and illustrated by Captain V Wheeler Holohan of the 12th London Regiment.
The Military Historical Society is pleased to be able to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the end of the "War to end all wars" with our 2018 Special Number based on the copy of Wheeler-Holohan from the library of the distinguished military historian Mr Bill Carman, which we understand to be Wheeler-Holohan's personal copy which he has annotated in pencil.
In this revised work we have included the pencil annotations and also additional material from Major A. F. Becke's "Order of Battle of Divisions", published in the years following the First World War under the Direction of the Historical Section of the Committee ofImperial Defence. Genuine examples of these badges are very scarce and consequently we have made extensive use of the splendid set of Players' cigarette cards issued in 1924 and 1925 entitled 'Army Corps and Divisional Signs 1914-1918' to illustrate this Special. Contemporary photographs of the badges being worn are also hard to find and we are delighted to have been able to include examples from the late Bob Marrion's collection.
The British Army during the First World War fielded a total of ninety divisions and the introduction, and widespread use, of formation signs not only provided a valuable, and not immediately obvious, distinguishing mark which identified the parent formation but also generated considerable esprit de corps. The Military Historical Society hope that this 2018 Special publication will serve as an extremely modest tribute to the thousands who proudly wore these' formation signs in the service of their Country...
Condition of the booklet is generally very good. The covers are clean and bright, the staple spine is intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There is a small price sticker on the rear side cover.
When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
