The Coniston Railway, by Michael Andrews and Geoff Holme

Book published by the Cumbrian Railway Association in 2012, 64 pages. Large A4 size softback (N7290X1)

From the introduction: The Coniston Railway opened between Broughton and Coniston in 1859, intending to tap the then expanding copper ore traffic from the copper mines at Coniston. To this end the line took a high-level course at Coniston to reach the copper mines wharf, thereby placing the passenger and goods station above the village, and making it accessible only by an inconveniently steep road.

The copper ore traffic soon began to dwindle and by 1890 had ceased, leaving slate, general goods and passengers as the principal traffic, the passengers being mainly tourists in the summer season. The steamer Gondola, which the Furness Railway had built and placed on Coniston Lake late in 1859, became one of the principal tourist attractions, so much so that a second steamer Lady of the Lake was added in 1908.

This book is a revised and enlarged edition of the Cumbrian Railways Association's first book, originally published in 1985. It tells the story of the planning and building of the Coniston Railway, its late Victorian and Edwardian heyday as a branch of the Furness Railway, and its eventual demise under British Railways ownership as a result of competition from the motor car, the bus and the lorry.

When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
