"BROTHERS OF PITY & other Tales of Beasts and Men" by Juliana Horatia Ewing, published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in the 1870s or 1880s - there is an inscription on the reverse of the front endpaper which reads "Prize for Diligence. Caroline Spokes, Xmas 1885". Hardback with pictorial boards.

Contents: Five stories written for children - although the language is fairly complex - which were originally published in Aunt Judy's Magazine for Young People with wonderful illustrations taken from etchings by Mr Charles Whymper.

Condition: This is a secondhand book in very good condition with expected wear. The binding is weak/cracked at the front and rear internal hinges and the front end paper has a 10x2cm strip torn from the bottom outer edge - does not effect any text or drawing. There are occasional numbers and letters by a child's hand in pencil which could easily be removed but they are quite charming in their own way. Please refer to the picture above.

Size: 14x10cm, 199 pages plus 12 pages of publisher's adverts with pictures and prices, 410g (before packing).
