Snowdon Mountain Railway, Llanberis, by Norman Jones

Published by Foxline in 1997, 64 pages. Hardback, c.19cm by 25cm (A14LX1)

From the introduction: In the preamble to SCENES FROM THE PAST No. 25: RAILWAYS OF NORTH WALES, Bala Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog the growth and decline of the slate quarrying industry was chronicled as the railways discussed in that work would not have been built had their purpose not been to exploit Snowdonia's mineral resources and further the prosperity of their promoters. Some of those railways, particularly when of narrow gauge dimensions, although no longer engaged in the slate traffic as such, are still extant, whilst some new lines have been built and all of these 'Leisure Lines' as they now are, play an important role in ensuring the continuing popularity of the Snowdonia area as a venue for relaxation and family holidays.

People interested in railways usually have a favourite line, and whilst comparisons are invidious, surely the most spectacular of those in the Llanberis area is The Snowdon Mountain Railway, not a 'Preserved' railway, but an undertaking still fulfilling the aspirations of its Victorian builders, - this line - "THE ONLY PUBLIC RACK & PINION RAILWAY IN BRITAIN" has maintained its immense popularity with generations of visitors to Snowdonia, indeed in the 100 years of its existence (the centenary celebrations were held on Friday, 21 June 1996) the line is estimated to have carried around 50 million passengers from Llanberis to the summit of Snowdon since it first opened to the public on Easter Monday, 6 April 1896.

An unforgettable sight, on a summers day, particularly to the steam enthusiast, is that of one of the immaculate, and distinctively liveried Snowdon Mountain Railway engines, barking energetically whilst pushing its single cherry-red and cream coach upwards and across the great ridge at Clogwyn Dur Arddu, below Snowdon's Summit, with the locomotive exhaust pluming up to mingle with a light bank of cumulus cloud crowning the peak. No less attractive however to the discerning eye of the 'modem traction' devotee and 'family group' and sharing the service with the 'steamers, are the trains in charge of one of the smart 0-4-0 class of 320 h.p. (238 kW) modem, diesel locomotives, built by the Hunslet Engine Co., Leeds....

The condition of the book is generally very good. The covers have one or two minor scuffs, but the spine is intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound.

When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
