Sailing Ships of War 1400-1860, by Frank Howard

Book published by Conway Maritime Press in 1979, 256 pages. Hardback with dust jacket - c.25cm by 30cm (A58N4CHX1)

From the rear side cover: Without the three-masted fully rigged ship the European discovery of the Americas, the Indies, and the Far East would have been impossible; without its broadside battery of cannon European domination of these areas would never have been achieved. Thus the sailing ship of war played a significant part in the shaping of the modern World.

Fighting ships were the principal instruments of national power and the largest and most complex machines of their day. This book is a comprehensive survey of their technical development from 1400 to 1860 from the advent of the three-roasted ship to the eclipse of naval sail. Incorporating much new information the book deals in detail with the hull design and construction, fittings, armament, mastigg, rigging and appearance of wooden warships. Special attention has been paid to the numerous illu, trations which. inelude plans and diagrams, and photographs of the most accurate contemporary models, prints and paintings.

Condition of the book is generally good. The dust jacket has several minor scuffs and blemishes, and light nibbling, creasing and wear along the edges and corners, but the spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. The front fly leaf has been price clipped

When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
