The Strand Magazine - An Illustrated Monthly (Bound Volumes I through X)


London: George Newnes, Burleigh Street, Strand, 1891 The Strand Magazine July 1891 till 1895 bound in 10 half yearly Volumes (Vols. I to X).

Each of the ten volumes in rubbed 3/4 leather, hinges starting, shelfwear, with marbled boards, text block edges and endpapers, frontispiece, profusely illustrated throughout. Some foxing spots commensurate with age, mainly to prelims and finals.


The first appearance of these famous Sherlock Holmes short stories was in The Strand Magazine. Several of these Holmes stories feature more illustrations (notably by Sidney Paget) than in the later book form first published in 1892, and in some (such as 'Cardboard Box ') the illustrations were exclusive to 'The Strand'


This is the first appearance of the 24 Sherlock Holmes adventures which was in the Strand Magazine, originally in monthly issues, here bound in 10 six monthly volumes, and preceeding the first publishing of the books "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" stories and "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" stories

Vol. VII, Jan - Jun: Martin Hewitt, investigator by A G Morrison, stories 1-4, illustrated by Sidney Paget.

Volumes VII-VIII feature the entire first series of cases for the consulting detective Martin Hewitt; probably the chief rival of Sherlock Holmes, Morrison's ingenious crime stories were commissioned by 'The Strand' entirely due to an appetite for Doyle imitations.

and The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard (eight parts in volumes VIII, IX and X, illustrated by W.B. Wollen). He also contributes: ''The Voice of Science''; Jules Verne, ‘An Express of the Future'.


A very scarce full set of volumes of the first appearance of these famous stories. Illustrated. Very heavy set, postage has been subsidised.
