US WWI/WW1 British-Made M1917 Doughboy Helmet w/ Postwar USMC Veteran EGA Badge

A very unique WWI American M1917 helmet, painted a shining bronze and mounted with a 1960s USMC badge. The shell is marked D/F, a British manufacturer, indicating that this helmet was made in Britain and purchased by the US when it first joined the war in 1917. The screwback EGA badge seems to be from the 1960s, and thus the most likely explanation for this is that this helmet was a decoration at a museum or a veterans hall, possibly VFW or the American Legion. The bronze paint shines very nicely in the right lighting, and certainly would have had an impressive look. These modifications also could have been done by a USMC veteran for parades.

The exterior paint has survived very nicely and goes together nicely with the EGA insignia. On the inside, the liner is fully attached to the helmet, though some weak spots from age exist. The chinstrap is missing one end and is in a somewhat brittle state, though the liner itself has held up very nicely, without much damage to either the oilcloth or the wool pad underneath. A fascinating piece that, despite some flaws, has held up relatively nicely throughout the years and will certainly make a spectacular piece on display, just as it did in the decades before.
