Illuminated Ge'ez manuscript Bible in Leather case. 11 hand colored illustrations, 158 vellum leaves. Early 20th century.
8vo. (6.75" x 9") early 20th century. Red leather over wood boards, covered in hand sewn floral patterned cloth bookcover with extra long sewn in bookmark and goatskin slipcase that slides into leather satchel for carrying. Illustrated with 11 hand-colored illuminations, including four styled as frontispieces, these with protective cloth stitched to top of illuminated leaves and hanging over illuminations. 158 unpaginated vellum leaves, handwritten in traditional two-column black and red script. 22.5x16.5 cm (9x6½"), blindstamped red leather stretched over boards, entirely covered by hand-stitched patterned cloth. Tucked into goatskin slipcase which fits in turn into custom goatskin carrying case with shoulder strap. Goatskin case somewhat rubbed and abraded; cloth covering rubbed along edges and splitting along spine, slightly toned; some headers and illuminations gently rubbed, occasional corrections to text in ballpoint pen, expected irregularities associated with vellum (ie small holes, one closed tear stitched shut), very good.
As with most tribal communities, religious or not, what is most familiar to them is what is depicted. This accounts for one of the illuminated pages featuring a group of men in tents with long guns, evidently not from biblical times. An interesting older bible, in the Ge'ez language, with amazing illuminated pages and interesting manuscript pages. A Fascinating book with slipcase and satchel. Hand Made.
From Wiki: Geʽez (/ˈɡiːɛz/; ግዕዝ Gəʽ(ə)z IPA: [ˈɡɨʕ(ɨ)z], and sometimes referred to in scholarly literature as Classical Ethiopic) is an ancient Ethiopian Semitic language. The language originates from what is now northern Ethiopia and Eritrea. Today, Geʽez is used as the main liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Ethiopian Catholic Church and Eritrean Catholic Church, and the Beta Israel Jewish community. The closest living languages to Geʽez are Tigre and Tigrinya, with lexical similarity at 71% and 68%, respectively. Most linguists believe that Geʽez does not constitute a common ancestor of modern Ethio-Semitic languages but became a separate language early on from another hypothetical unattested common language.
