Sketches of
Spain
Factory Sealed CD
When Miles Davis entered into collaboration with Gil Evans
for the recording of 'Sketches Of Spain' in 1959, the duo had already been
responsible for the albums 'Miles Ahead' and 'Porgy And Bess' which had paired
the trumpeter with a large ensemble arranged and conducted by the mercurial
Evans. 'Spain' became a further extension of a marriage seemingly made in
heaven as Davis revelled in settings tailor-made for him by a man totally
sympathetic to his needs. But we should view this music as a departure from the
norm, for, although it was produced in a live situation on occasion, Davis'
conventional outlet was the small group, two of which you can hear on our
second disc - 'Miles Davis And The Modern Jazz Giants'. If ever a listener
wanted an example of Miles Davis in contrasting settings they could not do
better than devour the music these two albums offer.
