Luftwaffe Colours 1935-1945 - Michael Ullmann - Hikoki Publications
RARE & OOP!
Yet another excellent book by Hikoki Publications! This one is hard to find.
Background:
THIS IS THE ORIGINAL 2002 EDITION - The second edition (by Crecy) had a hundred extra pages due to a revised layout, and larger photographs and diagrams, as well as some modest additions to the text. There was also an index, which is absent in this first edition, and a supplemental RLM colour chip card (Soon after publication, Hikoki released this card which featured 10 new colour chips - RLM 69, RLM 70, RLM 71, RLM 72, RLM 76B, RLM 79, RLM 80, RLM 81, RLM 82, RLM 83 - because the original colours had incorrectly been matched to Italian colours instead of German ones. This additional paint chip card was available direct from Hikoki. You can sometimes find this additional paint chip card in both old and revised versions of ‘Luftwaffe Colours’)
A continuation of Färben der Deutschen Luftwaffe 1935-1945 (1997) in German and an expanded English translation of Oberflächenschutzverfahren und Anstrichstoffe der Deutschen Luftfahrtindustrie und Luftwaffe 1935-1945 (1998) ("Surface Protection Procedures and Paint-Materials of the German Aviation Industry and Air Force"), the material has been based "exclusively on original documents." A glossy 44-colour card has been tipped in.
Several 'essential' books have been released in recent years covering the oft-debated subject of Luftwaffe camo & markings, from the Classic Publications books by Ken Merrick, to the books by AJ Press and RLM colour chip cards produced by Eagle Editions. I have found that the answer is to compare as many references as possible and make up your own mind!
This book is 256 pages long and, like the Classic Publications books, includes a set of RLM chips (44 chips). Along with this, you get many hundreds of photos, numerous drawings and several pages of colour profiles.
the Hikoki edition is the 6th incarnation of Ullman's work on this subject. Here is the timeline:
"Gordischen Knoten" (i.e. "Gordian Knot"), published in 1994
"Färben der deutschen Luftwaffe 1935-1945", published in 1997
"Colours of the German Luftwaffe 1935-1945", privately published in Australia in 1997/8(?), wire-bound softcover, 67 pages - This is an English translation by Kevin Clayton-Greene of #2 above. Contains a handful of photos (3 in colour), some drawings and a set of pasted-in colour chips.
"Oberflächenschutzverfahren und Anstrichstoffe der deutschen Luftfahrtindustrie und Luftwaffe 1935-1945", self-published in 1998, comb-bound softcover, 194 pages - Greatly expanded, with many more photos and drawings. Contains similar pasted-in colour chips.
"Oberflächenschutzverfahren und Anstrichstoffe der deutschen Luftfahrtindustrie und Luftwaffe 1935-1945", published by Bernard & Graefe Verlag in 1998, pictorial hardcover, 291 pages - Expanded text and pictorial content, with several colour photos. Contains a useful index, but no paint chips -- it has printed colour samples instead.
"Luftwaffe Colours 1935-1945, 1st edition", published by Hikoki in 2002, hardcover, 256 pages - English translation of #5, with better photo reproduction, but missing all the colour photos and the index, which is a major bummer. The camouflage pattern diagrams are in colour, but rather small. Contains better quality colour samples than #5, but the printers screwed up some colours, so Hikoki subsequently issued a supplemental page with 10 corrected samples.
"Luftwaffe Colours 1935-1945, 2nd edition", published by Hikoki in 2008, hardcover, 360 pages - Revised layout with slightly larger photo reproduction and enlarged camouflage pattern diagrams. Contains some additional/different photos, some additions to the text (e.g. a couple of pages on JG 54 dark camouflage colours, some extra paragraphs here and there), plus revised translations of a few passages. Still missing the colour photographs in #5, but the index is back!
Here is the product description:
Much has been written about the Luftwaffe but no aspect has been more controversial than the question of camouflage and markings of the aircraft.
In this comprehensive study, the author follows the development and use of many colours used and establishes the links between the then standard RAL colours and those adopted by the German Air Ministry.
using much original documentation he reveals how and why these finishes were developed and applied to both military and Lufthansa aircraft - in such detail that anyone with an interest in the subject, either as an historian, model-maker or aircraft preservationist - can recreate Luftwaffe colours with unprecedented accuracy.
Supplemented by hundreds of photographs, over 40 drawings and many pages of detailed colour aircraft profiles, Luftwaffe Colours presents a remarkable insight into the art of WWII German camouflage markings.
