Causes of fuel pump failure
Fuel pumps typically operate for seven to ten years before failure. Premature failures are most commonly caused by one of the following reasons:
- Excessive Hot/Cold Environments
- Contaminated fuel
- Excessively running a vehicle on a near empty tank which prevents the pump from being fully submerged causing it to overheat
Prior to Replacing Pump, check:
- Fuel Pump Fuse(s)
- Fuel Pump Relay
- Voltage at the Pump - test for bad wiring
- Voltage drop test - corroded connector, bad wiring
- Fuel System Pressure - test for pump pressure being outside accepted rang
Insrallation Guide
Check related fuel system components such as fuel filter, relays, vehicle wiring and connectors chassis grounds, fuel perssure regulator and fuel itself.
- Relieve System Fuel Pressure
- Disconnect the Battery
Disconnect negative battery cable to reduce possibility of sparks or engine staring.
Drain fuel into approved containers and dispose of per local codes or regulation.
- Remove Fuel Tank form Vehice
- Remove Old Fuel Pump
- Clean inside of Fuel Pump
- Inspect/Replace Vehice Wiring/Hoses as Needed
- Install New Fuel Pump and Strainer
- Install New Tank Seak (if applicable)
- Re-install Fuel Tank
- Replace Fuel Tank
- Fill GAS Tank with Clean Fuel
Clean fuel is critical to ensure proper fuel pump operation
- Start Enging and Check for Leaks or Problems
Reconnect battery cable key may need to be cycled on and off several time ti build prooer fuel system pressure
