How an AirTag Works:

An AirTag is a small tracking device developed by Apple to help you locate lost items, like keys, wallets, or bags. It relies on Bluetooth, Ultra-Wideband (UWB), and the Find My network. Here’s how it works:

  1. Bluetooth Communication: The AirTag communicates its location to nearby Apple devices using Bluetooth. These devices (iPhones, iPads, or Macs) relay the location data back to the AirTag's owner through Apple’s Find My network, even if the AirTag is far away. This network is massive, leveraging millions of Apple devices globally to help locate the AirTag.

  2. Find My Network: The Find My network is a secure, encrypted system that allows Apple devices to anonymously detect and share the location of nearby AirTags. This means if an AirTag is lost and is near another Apple device, that device can send its location to the owner through their iCloud account.

  3. Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for Precision Finding: AirTags use UWB technology, available on iPhones with U1 chips (iPhone 11 and later), to enable Precision Finding. This feature allows for highly accurate spatial tracking when you're near the AirTag. The iPhone can display a precise direction and distance to the AirTag using a combination of sound, haptics, and visual cues.

  4. Built-in Speaker: The AirTag has a built-in speaker that plays a sound when triggered via the Find My app. This helps you locate the AirTag when it’s nearby but out of sight, like when it's under furniture.

  5. Security and Privacy: AirTags are designed to maintain user privacy. Location data and history are encrypted, so even devices that help you locate your AirTag through the Find My network do not have access to your information. Furthermore, if an unknown AirTag is detected near you for an extended period, your iPhone will notify you, helping prevent unauthorized tracking.

How an MFi-Certified AirTag Works:

An MFi-certified AirTag is essentially an AirTag-compatible device made by third-party manufacturers, certified under Apple’s MFi (Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod) program. The MFi certification ensures that these devices meet Apple’s strict standards for quality, compatibility, and safety. MFi-certified AirTag-compatible trackers offer similar functionality to Apple's AirTag, but are built by other companies. Here’s how they work:

  1. Bluetooth & Find My Network: MFi-certified AirTag alternatives also use Bluetooth technology to communicate with Apple’s Find My network. Like Apple’s AirTag, they leverage nearby Apple devices to anonymously update their location.

  2. Find My App Integration: These devices are designed to work seamlessly with Apple’s Find My app, so you can track them just like AirTags. When you attach one to an item and mark it as lost, the same Find My network helps locate it.

  3. No Ultra-Wideband (UWB): Most MFi-certified AirTag-compatible devices don’t include UWB technology for Precision Finding, as the U1 chip is an Apple-exclusive feature. Therefore, while they still provide reliable tracking, they may not offer the highly accurate direction and distance guidance that Apple’s own AirTags offer on UWB-supported iPhones.

  4. Design & Features: MFi-certified trackers can vary in design and features. Some may include additional features such as louder speakers, longer battery life, or different form factors compared to Apple’s AirTag, while maintaining compatibility with the Find My ecosystem.

  5. Privacy and Security: Like Apple’s AirTags, MFi-certified devices are built with privacy in mind. They follow the same encrypted and anonymous location-sharing rules through the Find My network, ensuring user privacy is protected.

iPhone Compatibility for AirTag and MFi-Certified AirTags:

Both Apple’s AirTag and MFi-certified AirTag-compatible trackers work with the following iPhone models:

All devices must be running iOS 14.5 or later to support the use of AirTags and compatible MFi-certified trackers.
